Twenty-five years ago his mother bought him a second-hand computer, and so started an extended love affair with computers… and the subsequent birth of PEBL. Vincent R. Van Wyk is the CEO and Lead Product Developer of PEBL. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Physics and Applied Mathematics) and a Master’s Degree (Management Science and Engineering) from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Vincent has been shaping Aircraft Maintenance Engineers for 18 years with the Namibian Air Force; now applying his skills in crafting PEBL.
Many moons ago, the PEBL conversation began as a solution to the rapidly increasing global digital divide, where Africa remains the biggest victim. I am extremely passionate about the belief that what we do now, will determine Africa’s digital future, and inevitably Africa’s social and economic well being.
About 4 years ago, I partnered my thoughts with Realan, a market leader in the production of small form factor mainboards, to develop PEBL, Africa’s pioneering Radical Unit of Computing, a complete desktop PC replacement, that outclasses any other computer relative to performance, portability, appeal, accessibility, electricity consumption and size. Without my partners’ instrumental support, the birth of PEBL would not have been possible.
PEBL is a locally designed small form factor computer with dimensions of only 11.8 x 11.8cm. The exterior design features an aluminum casing with varied VGA, HDMI, mDP, USB and LAN ports. Internal features include an Intel chip, traditional HDD and solid-state drive options, Kingston RAM, built-in Wi-Fi- and Bluetooth connectivity. Top panels and casings are customizable and have touch-sensor and light-up LED functions. Windows 7, 8.1, 10 or Linux operating systems are factory installed on units. Processor range includes Intel Celeron Quad Core, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5 and Intel Core i7. PEBL is silent (below 20 decibels) and has very low electricity consumption.
PEBL is building the next evolution of computers. Combining design and technology, we are creating experiences in the home and business environments that promote human well-being and exquisiteness. Trends in the technology markets show that users do not only want innovative and high-performance products, but also products that look good, feel good and compliment their environments.
The PEBL ethos is to deliver versatile, energy efficient and quality computer hardware solutions, which offer an integrated user-experience; providing seamless contemporary convenience for the modern, digitally savvy African consumer. PEBL aims to become synonymous with the new African culture; rising up with them as a household brand, which delivers access to information through provision of the creative products that meet their unique needs.
